Russian River Ships

Description. Motor ships of the type TN or TR (projects 866, 866M and 866ME) are the mid-size tankers, with machine compartment and superstructure in the rear part, with five vertical cylindrical tanks, intended for carrying of oil products for the small consumers. Tankers were developed on the base of 600-ton dry cargo ships of the type ST (project 765).

Modifications. Modifications of different shipbuilding plants are distinguished outwardly by the details of superstructure. Modification of the plant "Leninskaya Kuznitsa" has superstructure with open galleries along the boards. Ships of the projects 866ME and 866M have increased machine power; project 866M also has increased cargo capacity.

Serial building. Ships were built since 1958 (project 866), 1961 (project 866ME) and 1966 (project 866M); several hundred units were built. Initially ships got serial names TN6 with the numbers of various series, which were later replaced with TN. Tankers in Lena basin got serial names TR.

Distribution. Ships of the project 866 and its variants were delivered to almost all shipping companies of european and eastern parts of Russia. At present time many early-built ships are written off.
