| GT and ST dry freighters |
Description. GT and ST are general serial names of the small dry cargo ships of different types (projects 276, 2760, 27-410, 765, 765A, 765 r.f., 585, 821, 898, 898A, 898B, 926, 932, 912A, 912B, 912V, 912I/P, 912M, 81360, 81365 and others). Ships widely differ in the time of built and operating charactiristics. Serial name GT means gruzovoy teplokhod or 'cargo ship', ST - sukhogruznyy teplokhod or 'dry cargo ship'. The serial name and numeration of some old series initialy depended on the shipping company and its general numeration for cargo ships; the numeration of newer series, as a rule, shows the cargo-carrying capacity.
Projects 276 and 2760. 700-ton german-built ships, which have four covered holds, with machine compartment and superstructure in the rear part. Project 2760 is a modification with a superstructure of more modern design and other rear part of the hull. Ships were built since 1949 (project 276) and 1955 (project 2760) till 1968; 120 units were built. Ships were assigned names after the rivers in the USSR and serial names ST with the numbers of 700th and 800th series. On the base of the project 2760 floating shop ships of the type PM (project 2766) were developed.
Projects 765, 765A, 765 r.f. and 585. 600-ton soviet-built ships, which have three covered holds, with machine compartment and superstructure in the rear part. Ships were built since 1955 till 1964 on several shipbuilding plants in two modifications, which are distinguished outwardly by the details of superstructure. Modification of the plant "Leninskaya Kuznitsa" has superstructure with open galleries along the boards. Several hundred units of the project 765 and its modifications were built. Ships were assigned names after the rivers in the USSR and serial names ST with the numbers from general numerations for cargo ships of different shipping companies: Kama Shipping Company - 300th, Moscow - 400th (serial name GT), Belaya - 500th, Volga - 600th, Yenisey - 700th, Lena - 900th. Ships in North-Western Shipping Company initially got serial names ST6, which was later replaced with common ones. On the base of the project 765 refrigerated cargo ships of the project 585 (serial name "Refrizherator2") were developed, built since 1957, and tankers of the type TN (project 866), built since 1958.
Project 821. 150- and 200-ton soviet-built ships, which have covered hold, with machine compartment and superstructure in the rear part. Ships were built since 1956; they were assigned serial names GT. On the base of the project 821 tankers of the project 868 were developed, built since 1960, floating shop ships of the project 897, built since 1963, and wastes tankers of the project 354K, built since 1972.
Projects 898, 898A, 898B and 926. 300-ton soviet-built ships, which have covered hold, with machine compartment and superstructure in the rear part. Further development of the project 821 with bigger length of the hull. Modifications of the project 898 differ in construction of the wheel-house and the rear part of the hull. Project 926 is a more modern modification, equipped with cranes for loading-unloading works. Ships were built since 1958 (project 898) and 1960 (project 926) on several shipbuilding plants; 31 units were built on shipyard "Baltija". Ships were assigned serial names GT with the numbers of 100th series (and probably others) and own specific names.
Project 27-410. 680-ton german-built ships, which have four covered holds, with machine compartment and superstructure in the rear part, equipped with lifting wheel-house and cranes for loading-unloading works. Ships were built since 1962; they were assigned names after the rivers in the USSR.
Projects 912A, 912B, 912V, 912I/P and 912M. 350-ton soviet and russian-built ships with little draught, which have two covered holds, with machine compartment and superstructure in the rear part, equipped with cranes for loading-unloading works. Project 912A and 912B are the ships for Amur and other eastern basins; the two modifications differ in construction of the crane and slightly in size of the hull and displacement. Project 912V is a modification with more modern superstructure and other details of construction, built for eastern and european basins. Ships were built since 1964 (project 912A), 1968 (project 912B) and 1981 (project 912V) on several shipbuilding plants. On the base of the project 912V ships of the project 912I/P were developed, built since 1986, equipped with automated bending barge-holding device for work with barge attachments on rivers with small curve radius, and also floating shop ships of the project 912M, built in 90-ties. As a rule, ships were assigned serial names ST with the numbers of various series.
Projects 81360 and 81365. 400-ton soviet and russian-built ships with little draught, which have covered hold, with machine compartment and superstructure in the rear part, including those equipped with cranes for loading-unloading works. Ships have automated barge-holding device for work with barge attachments. Ships were built since 1988 till 90-ties on several shipbuilding plants; 13 units were built on Velikiy Ustyug plant. Ships were assigned serial names ST with the numbers of 500th series and own specific names.
Other series. Serial names GT and GTM were assigned also to the small dry cargo ships of other types, including project 932. Serial names ST were assigned also to bigger ships of different types, including vegetable carriers ST-1300 (projects 19620, R-168 and 191).
Distribution. In many shipping companies serial names ST and GT united dry cargo ships of various types, including those, came from Germany as reparations after WWII. Ships, built later according to different serial projects, were delivered to all shipping companies of european and eastern parts of Russia and Ukraine. At present time many early-built ships are written off.
