Description. OZERNYY is a general serial name of the ships of two different types (projects 501 or Ch-800, slovakian designation RR800, 'river tug 800 h.p.'), the big raft tugs with ice strengthening.

Project Ch-800. Different modifications (so-called series I, II, III and IV) of the soviet project 501, differring in the machine power and some details of construction. Some sources mention the 1050 h.p. modification as the project 3801-S and the 1100 h.p. modification (series IV) as the project Ch-1100. During operation some ships were refitted for work as pushers.

Projects H-3180, H-3181. More modern type of tugs with similar characteristics and increased machine power. Project H-3181 is a modification with the other size of the hull, draught and some new details of the wheel-house.

Serial building. Ships of the project Ch-800 and its modifications were built in Czechoslovakia since 1952 till 1961. Ships were assigned names after the outstanding russian scientists, researchers and travellers, as well as the serial name "Ozernyy". 104 units were built. Ships of the projects H-3180 and H-3181 were built in Hungary since 1977. Not less than 16 units were built, among them 7 - of the initial project H-3180. Ships were assigned serial numbers starting from 201.

Distribution. Tugs of the project Ch-800 and its modifications were delivered to all main european and eastern river basins: Volga, Kama, Moscow, Ob-Irtysh, Yenisey, Lena shipping companies. At present time the majority of the ships are written off or laid up for absence of transportation of timber in rafts. Tugs of the projects H-3180 and H-3181 were delivered Volga, Kama, White Sea - Onega, Yenisey shipping companies. Due to the same reason they are used as auxiliary tugs in the backwaters and as pushers, as well as for eventual steering of non-selfpropelled units. One ship is laid up after a serious accident.
