Type "Okskiy"
Ship Types / Dry Freighters

Description. Motor ships of the type OKSKIY and similar (projects 559B, 776, R-97, R-97I and R-97T) are the mid-size little-draught ships-platforms, with double boards and double bottom, with machine compartment and superstructure in the rear part, including those equipped with automated bending barge-holding device for work with barge attachments on rivers with small curve radius. Ships are intended basically for carrying of bulk cargoes, as well as various vehicles. Some ships were equipped with the barge-holding device during operation.

Modifications. Different series of the project 559 have small differences. Project 776 is a project of reconstruction of the ships of the project 559 for work with barge attachment of the project 942I with the use of automated bending barge-holding device. Serial name "Okskiy" was assigned to the ships of two types, different in construction and characteristics: project 559 and its modifications and project R-97 and its modifications. Ships of the project R-97 were built to replace older ships of the project 559. Project R-97I has bending barge-holding device; project R-97T is a modification of the project R-97I for carrying of heavy cargoes.

Serial building. Ships of the project 559 were built since 60-ties in Ukraine and since 1963 in Russia by two shipyards. Ukrainian-built ships were assigned names after the towns in Ukraine; some dozens were built. Belyy Gorodok-built ships were assigned serial name "Okskiy"; 49 units were built, not less than a half of them were refitted or built according to the project 776. Refitting of the ships to the project 776 was begun in 1976. Velikiy Ustyug-built ships were assigned names after the republics of the USSR; 15 units were built. Ships of the project R-97 were built since 1977; 22 units were built.

Distribution. Ukrainian-built ships of the project 559 were delivered to Ukrainian Dnieper Shipping Company for work on Dnieper. Some of them were used during liquidation of the accident at Chernobyl power station. At present time most of them are owned by Ukrrechflot. Belyy Gorodok-built ships of the project 559 were delivered to Moscow Shipping Company for work on Oka, Moscow rivers and Upper Volga. Later some of them were transferred to Volga Shipping Company. Several ships are used as car ferries. Velikiy Ustyug-built ships of the project 559 are owned by Northern Shipping Company. Ships of the project R-97 were delivered to Moscow Shipping Company and also to North-Western, Belaya and Volga shipping companies. One ship was built for Latvia. Some early-built ships are written off or laid up.
