| Types "Kaliningrad" and "Refrizherator" |
Description. Motor ships of the types KALININGRAD (project 21-88, slovakian designation MNL2000, motorova nakladna lod, 'cargo motor ship 2000 tons') and REFRIZHERATOR (project 21-89, slovakian designation MCHL600/900, 'refrigerated cargo motor ship 600/900 tons') are the big dry cargo ships and refrigerators, which have four covered holds, with double boards and double bottom, with machine compartment and superstructure in the rear part. Dry cargo ships are intended basically for carrying of general, bulk and boxed cargoes; refrigerators - for fish, meat products, fruits and vegetables. In 90-ties some ships were converted into the "river-sea" class. They were shortened and got more modern equipment of holds and higher fore-part.
Modifications. Refrigerators of the project 21-88 have construction similar to the dry cargo ships of the project 21-89, and differ by the refrigerating equipment of the holds.
Serial building. Ships of the type "Kaliningrad" were built since 1962 till 1968; 102 units were built. Ships of the type "Refrizherator" were built since 1963 till 1966; 15 units were built. Dry cargo ships were assigned names after the towns in the USSR and the historical places of Moscow. Refrigerators got a serial name "Refrizherator"; they were assigned serial numbers starting from 901.
Distribution. Ships of the project 21-88 were delivered to the majority of shipping companies of Volga and eastern basins and to Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company. Ships of the project 21-89 were delivered to the shipping companies of eastern basins. Ships are operated on Volga, Don, Kama rivers, Volga-Don canal, Volga-Balt waterway, Ob, Irtysh, Yenisey, Lena, Amur rivers. Since 90-ties many ships are operated on foreign coastal lines mainly on Azov and Black seas (Ukraine, Turkey, Bulgaria), as well as on Baltic sea. Reconstructed ships make distant voyages to Great Britain and Nederlands. Some ships were sold to different other shipping companies, including foreign ones, and registered under "comfortable" flags. Several ships sank in 90-ties.
