Ship Types / Passenger Ships of Distant Sail

Description. Motor ships of the project 588 (series I, type RODINA and series II, type KOSMONAVT GAGARIN, german designation BiFa Typ A, Binnenfahrgastschiff Typ A, 'river passenger ship, type A') are the mid-size passenger ships, intended for work on passenger lines and river cruise routes. It is one of the most successful and mass series of such class in the USSR. Ships have single, double and 4-bed cabins, including those equipped with wash-bowls, luxury cabins with WCs and showers, two restaurants, two saloons. During operation cinema halls were added on the majority of ships. Оn some ships the cabin equipment was modernized for increase of the comfort. Also there were four lifeboats left on the ships instead of initial six.

Modifications. Ships of so-called series I were built to the initial project 588. After it the project was modified and building of series II was started. Modified motor ships are distinguished by the arrangement of some premises, stairways, smaller amount of wooden details in interiors.

Serial building. Since 1954 till 1961 49 units of the project 588 were built, among them 11 of the series I. Series II were started in 1957.

Distribution. Motor ships of the project 588 are operated: on Volga, Kama, Don, rivers and lakes of the Volga-Balt waterway, Yenisey. They work on various Volga tourist routes, routes Moscow - Saint Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk - Dudinka and also on passenger lines Moscow - Astrakhan, Moscow - Rostov-on-Don, Nizhniy Novgorod - Astrakhan. Ships of this type were delivered to Volga, Kama, North-Western, Moscow, Yenisey shipping companies. At present time some ships of the project 588 are laid up, some are written off, some are sold to different tourist and other companies. One ship burned down in 1978.
