Description. Diesel-electrical ships of the type DON (project 16) are the mid-size line icebreakers, equipped with towing hook. Ships have differental system.

Modifications. Serial units differ a little from pre-serial one in size of the hull.

Serial building. In 50-ties not less than 13 icebreakers of the project 16 were built, among them 10 serial units. Ships were assigned names after the rivers in the USSR.

Distribution. Icebreakers of this type were delivered to the main european and eastern shipping companies: Volga, Kama, Volgotanker, White Sea - Onega, Moscow, Ob-Irtysh, Yenisey, Lena. Ships were mainly used for the extension of the navigable period on rivers in autumn and spring. In summer some icebreakers were used as tugs. At present time the most part of the ships is laid up or written off.
